Introducing...

Problem:
Copper plating as stated in MSS SP58 section 6.3, is for identification purposes not corrosion protection. When this plating is subjected to industry standard salt spray laboratory tests it fails at 24 hours. After 24 hours the quality of the copper finish is unacceptable, due to red rust corrosion. The process accelerates with additional contact between the dissimilar metals and the advancing corrosion.

Solution:
Copper-Gard is the solution for the problems outlined above.

Copper-Gard hangers will be coated in a three step process:

  1. The parts are zinc plated to .0002" thick.
  2. The epoxy copper colored powder is applied by an electrostatic method.
  3. The coated parts are baked at 180 degrees for 20 minutes.

The Copper-Gard process applied to steel stampings or iron castings, results in copper hangers that provide corrosion protection. The epoxy also acts as an insulator avoiding contact between dissimilar metals. Please refer to detailed independent laboratory testing data below:

Certification:
All testing was performed in a mercury-free environment. All samples were tested in a salt chamber using a 5% salt solution at 95 degrees Fahrenheit for a total of 1000 hours. Testing is in accordance with ASTM-B117-97. The analysis is in accordance with MMA QC/QA manual and related procedures; first edition dated 3-1-99, revision 12.

Test Results:

Hours Attack Code Degree of Corrosion
24 - 1000 None No Red Rust

Evaluation:
Copper-Gard is a far superior coating for dealing with corrosion problems related to copper tube hangers.
